One of the most renowned bluegrass festivals in the country takes place on the western
slopes of the Grand Tetons in Targhee during mid-August. The Grand Targhee Bluegrass
Festival ( www.grandtarghee.com , day pass $55-65, all weekend pass $99-169, camping
$35-115) draws a large number of the best bluegrass musicians in the country, including
Brother Mule, Danny Barnes, and Sarah Jarosz, along with a large number of fans. Held at
the Grand Targhee Resort (800/827-4433), tent and RV camping is allowed in the national
forest during the festival weekend. In addition to performances all day long, there is also
plenty of food, arts, and crafts available.
Also taking place at Grand Targhee Resort, in mid-July, the decade-old Targhee Fest
(day pass $55-65, all weekend pass $99-169, camping $35-115) is a lively three-day music
festival with an eclectic mix of artists such as Los Lobos and John Hiatt. Camping is also
allowed in the national forest during this event.
The Jackson Hole Film Festival ( www.jacksonholefilmfestival.org ) is a biennial event
dedicated to nature conservation, held annually in late September-early October. The six-
day festival attracts leaders in science, conservation, and media as numerous films are
screened and related social events and activities are organized throughout the week. The
festival is held at the Jackson Lake Lodge, except for the final event, which screens selected
finalists at the Center for the Arts in downtown Jackson.
Winter Fest (307/733-3316, www.jacksonholechamber.com ) gives residents and visit-
ors alike one more reason to celebrate the snow. Happening over two weeks in February,
the celebration includes events like snow sculpting, skiing, ice skating, and wine tasting.
Another winter event everyone looks forward to is the International Pedigree Stage
Stop Dog Race (307/734-1163, www.wyomingstagestop.org ). It takes place from the last
weekend in January through the first week of February. Begun in 1996, it is the largest U.S.
dogsled race outside Alaska. The race begins in Jackson and runs 500 miles to Park City,
Utah. It is unusual in that the participants stop for the night in towns along the way, in-
cluding Lander, Pinedale, Big Piney-Marbleton, Alpine, Kemmerer, Lyman, Evanston, and
Uinta County. Each town along the route celebrates with different festivities as they greet
and cheer on the racers.
SHOPPING
For those with time and money, shopping can practically be an athletic pursuit in Jackson,
