In-Depth Information
The story of Signal Mountain's name is a rather tragic one. Around the turn of the 20th
century, a local rancher named Roy Hamilton got lost when he was out hunting. Rescuers
agreed to light a fire on the mountain as soon as anyone found Hamilton. After nine days,
a fire was lit atop the mountain, signaling the end of rescue efforts. Tragically, Hamilton's
body was found in the Snake River, and some speculated his business partner had suggested
he cross the river in a particularly dangerous spot.
