In-Depth Information
Entrance Stations
Grand Teton National Park has two official entrance stations, but can be accessed from the
south (Jackson), the east (Dubois) and the north (Yellowstone). Although you will be in
Grand Teton National Park starting just 5 miles north of Jackson, the southern-most Moose
Entrance Station is about 20 miles north of town. The eastern entrance at Moran Junction
is 30 miles north of Jackson and 55 miles west of Dubois, Wyoming, over the Togwotee
Pass, which is closed in winter. From the north, visitors enter Grand Teton National Park
from Yellowstone; the $25 admission is good for both parks for seven days. Visitors coming
in from Yellowstone can stop for information at Flagg Ranch Information Station or the
Colter Bay Visitor Center 18 miles south of Yellowstone.
Backcountry Camping
With more than 200 miles of maintained trails in the park, backpacking and backcountry
camping provide a unique way to explore the area. Permits are required and can be obtained
for free at the Craig Thomas Visitor Center, the Colter Bay Visitor Center, or the Jenny Lake
Ranger Station. Roughly one-third of backcountry campsites in heavily used areas can be
reserved in advance January 1-May 15. Reservations (307/739-3309) cost $25. All campers
are required to use bear-proof canisters below 10,000 feet and at sites without bear boxes.
Free canisters are provided when registering for a permit.
Emergencies
For medical emergencies within the park, dial 911. St. John's Medical Center (625 E.
Broadway, Jackson, 307/733-3636) is open year-round, and the Grand Teton Medical
Clinic (307/543-2514 during business hours or 307/733-8002 after hours, 9am-5pm daily
mid-May-mid-Oct.) is located in the Jackson Lake Lodge.
