$5.25-14, dinner $9-31), an old-school establishment that has been feeding Yellowstone
visitors and lucky locals during the summer season since the early 1900s. Don't miss the
homemade pie.
Another West Yellowstone institution is Buckaroo Bill's Ice Cream (24 N. Canyon
St., 406/646-7901, seasonal hours Mon.-Sat. May-Oct., $6.75-26), which has excellent
bison burgers, steaks, and sandwiches in addition to mouthwatering Montana-made ice
cream. The joint is popular, though, and it's not always easy to get a seat; the outside
patio is a lively place for a meal. Beartooth Barbeque (111 N. Canyon St., 406/646-0227,
11am-10pm daily May-Oct., $9-25) serves excellent slow-cooked meat. Pete's Rocky
Mountain Pizza and Pasta (112 Canyon St., 406/646-7820, lunch and dinner hours change
seasonally) serves up good pizza and hearty pasta dishes. If you like Mexican street food,
the best place within a day's drive from Yellowstone is, without a doubt, M Taqueria Las
Palmitas (21 N. Canyon St.), known locally as “The Taco Bus.” We're talking soft tacos,
beans, and more, piled onto paper plates and served in an old school bus. It couldn't be less
fancy or more satisfying.
For a more gourmet experience, Serenity Bistro (38 N. Canyon St., 406/646-7660,
www.sydneysbistro.com , 11am-3pm and 5pm-close daily May-Oct., $6-28) is undoubtedly
the place. They serve excellent, fresh meals utilizing local ingredients whenever possible.
Entrées include the bistro burger, Panang chicken, trout escalope, and porterhouse pork
chop. They also offer gourmet salads and sandwiches for lunch and boast the most extensive
wine list in town.
Six miles outside of town is the Bar N Ranch (970 Buttermilk Creek Rd., 406/
646-9445, www.bar-n-ranch.com , 7am-10am and 5pm-10pm daily May-Oct., $15-45), a
wonderful place for a meal. With beautiful views all around, you can indulge in terrific
Western gourmet cuisine including game burgers, bison stir-fry, steaks, and pasta. An inter-
esting twist on the meal, one option is to have the restaurant provide the food, but you cook
it on an outside grill.
