Faithful doesn't stop being predictable just because people go to bed or the weather turns
cold—some of the most magical eruption viewings can happen without crowds. Choose a
full-moon night, any time of year, and be willing to get up in the middle of the night. The
vision of Old Faithful erupting in winter with snow and ice, frost, and steam in every direc-
tion is remarkable.

If you take the time to come to Yellowstone to see Old Faithful, take the time—an hour
or more is ideal—to walk through the other marvelous features of the Upper Geyser Bas-
in. Giantess Geyser can erupt up to 200 feet high in several bursts. The irregular erup-
tions happen 2-6 times each year and can occur twice hourly, continuing 4-48 hours, and
changing the behavior of many of the other geysers in the region. Doublet Pool, a colorful
hot spring with numerous ledges, is lovely and convoluted. You can actually hear Doublet
vibrating and collapsing beneath the surface. Looking something like a fire hose shooting
130-190 feet in the air, Beehive Geyser typically erupts twice daily, each eruption lasting
4-5 minutes. Grand Geyser is the world's tallest predictable geyser, erupting every 7-15
