West Thumb Geyser Basin
On the western edge of Yellowstone Lake is the stunningly eerie West Thumb Geyser Basin,
a collection of hot springs, geysers, mud pots, and fumaroles that dump a collective 3,100
gallons of hot water into the lake daily. An excellent boardwalk system guides visitors
through the area, but there have been injury-causing bison and bear encounters on the
boardwalk, so keep your eyes open.
Abyss Pool is a sensational spring, some 53 feet deep, that transforms in color from tur-
