In-Depth Information
Whether the bulge is gaseous or potentially volcanic in nature is the subject of ongoing re-
search.
Aside from its geological significance, Yellowstone Lake also offers plenty of recre-
ational opportunities, primarily in the form of boating and fishing. The water is bitter cold,
though, typically 40-50°F, and not suitable for swimming. Canoes and kayaks can be ren-
ted at Bridge Bay Marina (307/344-7311 or 866/439-7375), just south of Lake Village or
21 miles north of West Thumb. There is great fishing for native cutthroat trout as well. It's
worth mentioning that early visitors to the park loved to tell stories about catching fish at
the edge of the lake and then dipping their catch in the hot springs at West Thumb Geyser
Basin to cook them without taking the fish off the line—a practice that would be seriously
frowned upon today.
The rambling pale-yellow Lake Yellowstone Hotel was built in 1891 and is an elegant
reminder of Yellowstone's bygone era. The lobby and deck, which overlook the lake, are
worth seeing, even if you are not staying here. Grab an iced tea and soak in the views; this
is a stunning spot. If you can, stay for a meal and enjoy the live piano music. The crowds
will fade as you gaze on the idyllic scenery, both natural and artificial.
