ures, available sunlight, and pH levels.
Liberty Cap at the base of the terraces is an excellent example of a dormant spring,
where all but the core cone have been eroded away. Minerva and Canary Spring and
Terrace are two other springs worth seeing. Their temperatures average around 160°F, and
when they are flowing they often put on marvelous color displays.
You can practically watch limestone form as the water cools at Mammoth Hot Springs.
Tower Falls
Eighteen scenic miles down the road from Mammoth Hot Springs—past Undine Falls and
Blacktail Plateau, where you can see deer, elk, and bison along with some impressive
lookouts—is Tower Junction and the breathtaking Tower Falls. The waterfall itself cascades
132 feet from volcanic basalt. A popular spot with visitors and just steps from the parking
lot, this is not the ideal place for solitude, but it is lovely to see.
