full-day floats on the lower Stillwater and on the more dramatic upper section (half-day
$45 adults, $25 children), which is only floatable in early summer. Paintbrush Adven-
tures (86 N. Stillwater Rd., 406/328-4158, www.paintbrushadvenutures.com ) offers guided
horseback riding, hiking, and fishing.
The Grizzly Bar & Grill (1 Main St., www.wherethehellisroscoe.com , 406/328-6789),
along the East Rosebud River in Roscoe, offers a perfect setting for a delicious Montana
meal. The cuisine is classic—relish trays and steaks large enough to hang off the edges of
your plate—and the ambience is idyllic. Diners can enjoy a great meal on the deck over-
looking the tumbling river. Ah, summer in Montana—short but so sweet.
RUNNING OF THE SHEEP
It's not exactly Pamplona's Running of the Bulls, but Reed Point's Great Montana
Sheep Drive (406/326-2315), also known as “Running of the Sheep,” is a Montana
classic. Though history might suggest this was a reaction to conflict between sheep-
herders and cattle ranchers, a tongue-in-cheek thumbing of the nose perhaps, the
truth is that this event was started in 1980 when the town (population, according
to one sign posted in town, “about 100: 99 good folks and one real jerk”) gathered
to auction off an 89-year-old bachelor in hopes of finding him a companion. The
sheep were introduced in 1989, Montana's centennial celebration of statehood during
which the relatively nearby town of Roundup was planning a cattle drive. One resid-
ent (possibly the jerk?) had the idea of a sheep drive that would actually cross in front
of the cattle. The cattle confrontation was quashed, but the idea of the sheep drive
took hold, and the event has been growing every year since. Roughly 2,000 sheep
make their way down Main Street, sandwiched between thousands of spectators and
more than 70 food vendors. The annual event also includes a Mutton Cook-Off, a
parade, a car show, a street dance, a kids' carnival and petting zoo, local crafts sales,
and a variety of entertainment. The event is scheduled annually the Sunday of Labor
Day. For more information, call 406/326-2315.
