Fishing
Bozeman is a trout-lover's paradise, with several blue-ribbon streams nearby. The Gallatin,
Jefferson, and Madison Rivers flow through the valley, forming the headwaters of the
Missouri River in aptly named Three Forks (31 miles west of Bozeman on I-90). There is
also worthwhile fishing on a private spring creek at the Milesnick Ranch (5805 Dry Creek
Rd., 406/388-7001, www.milesnickrecreation.com , rod fees $50-75/day) in Belgrade. Al
Gadoury of 6X Outfitters (406/586-3806, www.6xoutfitters.com ) is widely considered to
be among the region's best, particularly when it comes to spring creeks. As an aside, his
shore lunches (think grilled moose burgers) are second to none.
Other local outfitters can offer excellent advice and guide services. The River's Edge
(2012 N. 7th Ave., 406/586-5373, www.theriversedge.com ) is one of Bozeman's oldest
and most venerated. The Bozeman Angler (23 E. Main St., 406/587-9111,
www.bozemanangler.com ) offers regular classes and is conveniently located downtown.
Montana Troutfitters (1716 W. Main St., 406/587-4707, www.troutfitters.com ) has been
guiding fly-fishing excursions since 1978 and offers excellent online fishing reports. Yellow
Dog Flyfishing Adventures (406/585-8657 or 888/777-5060,
www.yellowdogflyfishing.com ) offers first-class trips in the region and mind-blowing fish-
ing adventures around the world.
MM Floating the Madison River
In a college town with an active and outdoorsy population, floating the rivers is a popular
pastime. The calm and relatively warm Madison River is easily the most popular, followed
by the slightly more remote Jefferson River. For an idyllic half-day float on the Madison,
rent an eight-person raft (from $85) or inner tubes (from $10) from Big Boys Toys All
Terrain Rentals (8254 Huffine Ln., 406/587-4747, www.bigboystoysrentals.com ). Or rent
tubes with coolers (from $8) or a variety of stand-up paddleboards (from $24) from Pink
Cowboy Recreation Rentals (8191 Huffine Ln., 406/219-8823, www.pinkcowboy.net ),
which donates 5 percent of profits to the fight against breast cancer.
From either place in Four Corners, drive 30 minutes west on Highway 84 (also known
as Norris Rd.) to the Warm Springs access. Float time down to Black's Ford is 2-3.5 hours,
