Camping
Two miles east of Anaconda is a surprisingly lush and beautiful campground at Lost Creek
State Park (5750 Lost Creek Rd., 406/287-3541, www.fwp.mt.gov/parks , May-Nov., $23),
set amid pink and white granite cliffs that soar 1,200 feet above the canyon floor. There
is a lovely waterfall, and campers can often spot bighorn sheep and mountain goats on the
cliffs. There are 25 sites, vault toilets, fire rings, picnic tables, and drinking water.
There are numerous campgrounds, both public and private, at Georgetown Lake. Among
the closest to the lake is Lodgepole Campground (Hwy. 1, 406/859-3211,
www.reserveamerica.com , small fees determined annually), which has 31 sites, fire pits,
picnic tables, and vault toilets. The campground is across the highway from the lake.
Food
Though far from elegant (or even inviting, to be perfectly frank), Barclay II Supper Club
and Lounge (1300 E. Commercial Ave., 406/563-5541, 5pm-close Tues.-Sun., $15-80) is
the most popular fine-dining restaurant in town. In the classic tradition of seven-course
meals, what this establishment lacks in ambience it more than makes up for with friendly
service and hearty food. Entrées include steak, seafood, chicken, veal, and pasta.
For big burgers, made-from-scratch pizza, sandwiches, salads, and an extremely family-
friendly atmosphere (you can eat in a Volkswagen Bug or on a table made from an engine
block), Classic Café (627 E. Park Ave., 406/563-5558, www.anacondaclassiccafe.com ,
11am-9pm Tues.-Thurs., 8am-10pm Fri.-Sat., 8am-9pm Sun., $6-21) is an excellent choice
for friendly service and a diverse menu; the food is consistently good.
Another good bet for a satisfying meal in Anaconda is The Daily Grind Deli &
Mesquite Grill (100 Main St., 406/563-2393, 11am-9pm Mon.-Thurs., 11am-10pm Fri.-
Sat.), which serves everything from homemade soup and rolls, deli sandwiches, and baby
back ribs.
