Sights
A fantastically pink art deco building, the Washoe Theatre (305 Main St., 406/563-6161,
movies and frequent live performances daily year-round) was built in 1936 with massive
murals as well as silver, copper, and gold leaf to be a movie palace in the truest sense. It
is one of the few art deco theaters standing today and was ranked fifth in the nation for its
architectural value by the Smithsonian Institution.
The only Jack Nicklaus signature course in the state, the publicly owned Old Works
(1205 Pizzini Way, 406/563-5989, www.oldworks.org , $35-89 for 18 holes, depending on
the season, day, and tee time, discounts for booking online 5 or more days in advance) is a
fabulous and challenging course built entirely on a Superfund site. The design makes im-
pressive use of the black slag for all its bunkers along with many relics from the original
smelter, including the remains of flues and ovens. The course offers generous fairways and
beautifully maintained greens, and the fishable Warm Springs Creek offers water challenges
on several holes. If you only play one course in Montana, this is the one.
Recreation
GEORGETOWN LAKE
A vast artificial lake that dates back to the mining era and has been a longtime respite for
residents of Butte, Georgetown Lake is a popular but relatively uncrowded recreation area
for boating, fishing, camping, and windsurfing. The elevation here tops 6,000 feet (the loc-
al ski area is visible from the lake), so the wind can pick up and the weather can change
quickly. In addition to rainbow trout, the lake has a healthy population of kokanee salmon.
There are four public boat ramps and a number of campgrounds, and in the winter ice fish-
ing and snowmobiling are among the most popular activities. There are not a huge number
of services, but that is part of Georgetown's charm. The lake feels like something out of the
1950s, when people went to their cabins or brought their campers and simply enjoyed the
great outdoors.
Boats can be rented, and flies or worms acquired, at the tiny Moose Marina (14411
Hwy. 1 W., 406/563-3277, 8am-8:30pm Mon.-Fri., 7am-9pm Sat.-Sun. May-Sept.), the
only marina on the lake. In addition to docks, a boat launch, and boat rentals that range from
canoes to small motorized fishing boats, Moose Marina offers gasoline, fishing licenses,
hand-tied flies, and a small assortment of food and sundries.
