In-Depth Information
The other museums are open during summer but closed during winter. Frontier
Montana covers the history of the Old West and displays a vast and impressive gun col-
lection. Desert John's Saloon Museum has a large amount of whisky memorabilia and
brings the saloons of the Old West to life. The Powell County Museum covers local his-
tory, which includes mining history, of course; exhibits include antique furniture, historical
photos, and a weapons collection from both World Wars. Yesterday's Playthings is a toy
and doll museum with a fun collection of antique dolls, mohair teddy bears, baby carriages,
horse-drawn carriages, and tea sets that date back to the mid-1800s. The newest attraction
in the museum complex is Cottonwood City, a completely reconstructed historic mining
town with a school, a mortuary, and a blacksmith's shop where blacksmithing demonstra-
tions take place daily in season.
DUDE RANCH VACATIONS IN GOLD WEST COUNTRY
Southwest Montana is a natural destination for ranch vacations, with an age-old
ranching history, wide-open spaces, and spectacular mountain scenery. Indeed, the
challenge is choosing among the dozens of wonderful and welcoming ranches in
the region. One of the best resources available, aside from a good friend who will
steer you to a personal favorite, is the Montana Dude Rancher's Association (888/
284-4133, www.montanadra.com ) . In addition to a number of ways to choose a ranch
(by location, type of experience, and so on), their website offers some helpful advice
in finding the best fit for your family.
Location: Imagine yourself on horseback, and then think about the type of land-
scape you want to explore. Do you want to lope through open meadows, or
wind up mountain trails? Do you want to be out in the middle of sublime
nowhere, or would you like to be just a quick ride from town? Determine where
you want to be, and then look for ranches in the immediate vicinity.
Type of riding: What is your main objective, and your comfort level, for your
time in the saddle? Would you like to be on a working ranch, helping with daily
chores like rounding up cattle? Or are you more interested in working on your
riding skills in clinics? There are ranches that can accommodate both. There
are also places where you can just ride as the means to take in the incredible
scenery. Your choice will come down to working ranches, dude ranches, and
ranch resorts.
