look like enormous snow monsters. It's magical—or terrifying, depending upon your point
of view. This is a BIG mountain, serious skiing and family fun at its best. The mountain
stays open year-round for hiking, mountain biking, zipline tours, and an alpine slide, among
other activities.
Cross-Country Skiing
For cross-country skiers, fabulous groomed trails can be found locally at the Glacier
Nordic Center (1200 U.S. 93 W., Whitefish, 406/862-9498,
www.glaciernordicclub.wordpress.com , $8 ages 13 and up) on the Whitefish Lake Golf
Course. There are seven miles of skate and classic trails on gently rolling terrain, and
lighted night skiing on two miles of trails until 11pm.
Hiking and Biking
In addition to having Glacier National Park as a backyard, both Kalispell and Whitefish
have excellent hiking and biking trails. Among the adventures at Whitefish Mountain
Resort (3840 Big Mountain Rd., Whitefish, 406/862-2900 or 877/754-3474,
www.skiwhitefish.com ) , there are serious mountain biking opportunities for the hard-core,
and the not-so-hard-core, who would prefer to limit their rides to downhill only. There are
27 miles of single-track on the mountain, both lift-accessed (full-day or 2-hour lift tickets
are available) and cross country. For hikers, the Danny On Trail winds 3.8 miles from the
base of the ski hill to the summit.
Just four miles southwest of Kalispell, Lone Pine State Park (300 Lonepine Rd., Kal-
ispell, 406/755-2706, www.fwp.mt.gov/parks , day use $5 nonresidents) has a nature trail,
miles of hiking and biking trails with scenic overlooks, and a year-round visitors center with
flush toilets and a picnic shelter.
Golf
Both Kalispell and Whitefish are big golfing destinations as soon as the snow melts.
There are three public courses in Whitefish, including the North and South Courses at
the Whitefish Lake Golf Club (1200 U.S. 93 N., 406/862-5960, www.golfwhitefish.com ,
$61 for 18 holes, $32 for 9 holes, $40 for 18 holes after 2pm), and five public courses in
Kalispell. Among those are Big Mountain Golf Club (3230 U.S. 93 N., 800/255-5641,
www.bigmountainclub.com , rates vary), the 36-hole Buffalo Hill Golf Club (1176 N. Main
St., 888/342-6319, www.golfbuffalohill.com , $65-82 for 18 holes, depending on whether
you walk or ride, $25-33.50 for 9 holes, $60 for 18 holes after 3pm), and Village Greens
