In-Depth Information
The Museum at Central School
The Central School building was opened in 1894 and for more than 100 years housed differ-
ent educational institutions. Slated for demolition in the early 1990s, the city of Kalispell in-
stead invested more than $2 million renovating the historic building. Since 1999 it has been
used by the Northwest Montana Historical Society, which oversees the Museum at Cent-
ral School (124 2nd Ave. E., Kalispell, 406/756-8381, www.yourmuseum.org , 10am-5pm
Mon.-Fri., $5 adults, $4 seniors, free for children). The museum is dedicated to preserving
the unique history of northwestern Montana and especially the history of Kalispell. Perman-
ent exhibits include a historical examination of the Flathead Valley and the growth of the
logging industry in Montana.
ENTERTAINMENT AND EVENTS
With so much to do year-round in this part of the state, the calendar is always full with
seasonal events. In northwestern Montana, summertime means farmers markets, and a
good one is the Kalispell Farmers Market (Center St. and 5th Ave., 406/752-3350,
9am-12:30pm Sat. mid-Apr.-Oct.). In Whitefish, summer brings the Downtown Farmers
Market (1 Central Ave., 406/862-2043, www.whitefishfarmersmarket.org , 5pm-7:30pm
Tues. late May-mid-Sept.), which offers local produce and art, handmade crafts, prepared
food, and a variety of entertainment.
