10am-5pm Tues.-Sun. mid-June-mid-Oct., $10 adults, $9 seniors, $6 students, $4 children)
was completed in 1895 and designed by the renowned Spokane, Washington, architect Kirt-
land Cutter. The Conrads made sure that the residents of Kalispell felt some connection to
the house: On Christmas Day of the year it was finished, the Conrad family invited people
from around town who would otherwise have spent the holiday alone to share in their feast.
The entire city was invited to a grand New Year's Eve ball a week later. Over the years,
Alicia Conrad hosted famous parties, including a Halloween gathering just after a fire had
burned through the roof of the mansion. Alicia decorated the hole with Spanish moss, artifi-
cial bats, and volcanoes. After her death in 1923, the family continued to occupy the home
until the mid-1960s. Conrad himself had only lived in the house for seven years before his
death at age 52. In 1974, his youngest daughter donated the residence to the city of Kalis-
pell. The 26-room, nine-bedroom Norman-style mansion has been beautifully restored and
is furnished with the family's original furniture. There is also a large collection of family
clothing and three generations of children's toys.
