In St. Ignatius, the Four Winds Indian Trading Post (U.S. 93, 3 miles north of St.
Ignatius, 406/745-4336, www.fourwindsindiantradingpost.com , 10am-6pm daily summer,
12pm-5pm daily winter) is the oldest operating Indian trading post in the state. Opened in
1870, the Fours Winds has long supplied local Native Americans with a variety of wares,
including beads, face paint, animal hides, and dance bells. The store is authentic and sells
traditional Native American crafts alongside history books and made-in-Montana products.
Another wonderful little shop in St. Ignatius is the Bitterroot Fiber Arts Studio (55563
Kerns Rd., 406/210-5020, www.bitterrootranch.net , by appointment). Proprietor Judy Colv-
in uses wool from the sheep raised on their ranch to make wonderful felted items that in-
clude gorgeous purses, scarves, wraps, hats, and wall hangings. She also teaches workshops
and private lessons in felting with wool.
A good place to stop in Polson for some warm Montana bedding is Three Dog Down
