Hiking at Jewel Basin
One of the best and most unique places in the state to hike is the
Jewel Basin
(Forest Rd.
5392, 10 miles northeast of Bigfork, 406/387-3800,
www.fs.fed.us/r1/flathead
)
, a wilder-
ness area with high peaks, lush forests, and plenty of lakes. Camping is permitted, and the
trails can be crowded on weekends. Some of the best day hikes include those into
Black
Lake
(8 miles round-trip), the
Jewel Lakes
(9 miles round-trip), or the
Twin Lakes
(5
miles round-trip). The best map for the area is published by the
Glacier Natural History
Association
(406/888-5756,
www.glacierassociation.org
). Note that grizzlies frequent the
area, particularly in late summer when the huckleberries are ripe.
Always stop for Flathead cherries at roadside stands.
