Wed., 7am-3pm and 5pm-9pm Thurs.-Fri., 7am-9pm Sat.-Sun.) specializes in food that is
grown and raised locally. Don't miss the huckleberry pancakes for breakfast; it may be the
best breakfast in town. Lunch includes hefty sandwiches, and dinner entrées range from
sandwiches and salads to Mexican fare and pasta. Another Missoula favorite is the Uptown
Diner (120 N. Higgins Ave., 406/542-2449, 8am-3pm daily, $5-10), which serves breakfast
all day. And it's worth noting that breakfasts here should always be washed down with a
milk shake!
For a quick and scrumptious bite with a killer cup of coffee, try Bernice's Bakery
(190 S. 3rd St. W., 406/728-1358, www.bernicesbakerymt.com , 6am-8pm daily, sand-
wiches $6), a real-butter and from-scratch kind of place featuring high-quality organic
ingredients, menus that change daily, and sheer artistry in everything they do. With a
strong coffeehouse vibe and a commendable commitment to community, Bernice's also
hosts blues concerts the first Thursday of every month. If you leave without indulging
your sweet tooth, you've made an enormous mistake. Caffé Dolce (500 Brooks St., 406/
830-3055, www.caffedolcemissoula.com , 7am-4pm and 5pm-9pm Mon.-Thurs., 7am-4pm

pasta is homemade, the wine list is enormous and fabulous, and the traditional Italian coffee
service goes from morning until evening. There's also a location at Southgate Mall (2901
Brooks St., 406/549-4914, 11am-7:30pm Mon.-Sat., 11am-5pm Sun.).
If you're just starting your Montana adventure, you'll need to get in shape for all the
fabulous ice-cream offerings. A great place to start is Big Dipper Ice Cream (631 S. Hig-
gins Ave., 406/543-5722, www.bigdippericecream.com ), which has unexpected but out-of-
this-world flavors like cardamom, Honey Porter, Irish whiskey, and mango habanero sorbet
in addition to the lip-smacking classics. Don't miss daily special flavors like cotton candy,
Thai peanut curry (really), and Elvis (peanut butter, banana, chocolate chip, chocolate, and
bacon). During summer, the walk-up window is open 11am-11pm daily. Hours vary the rest
of the year, so call ahead.
