The Fair Trade Store
The Fair Trade Store (519 S. Higgins Ave., 406/543-3955, 10am-6pm Mon.-Sat.) is op-
erated by the Jeannette Rankin Peace Center and promotes equitable and fair partnerships
between producers and distributors of goods. There is a distinctive and colorful selection of
merchandise from around the globe, including textiles, pottery, silver, and handmade cards.
Butterfly Herbs
In addition to being Missoula's oldest espresso bar, Butterfly Herbs (232 N. Higgins Ave.,
406/728-8780, www.butterflyherbs.com , 7am-7pm Mon.-Fri., 9am-5:30pm Sat.-Sun.) is a
fun and eclectic gift shop. They sell whole herbs, teas, coffee, and spices in bulk as well as
soaps, handmade jewelry, candles, and other decorative goods.
Rockin Rudy's
Rockin Rudy's (237 Blaine St., 406/542-0077, www.rockinrudys.com , 9am-8pm Mon.-
Sat., 11am-6pm Sun.) uses as a tagline, “A place. Sort of.” More than just a place, Rockin
Rudy's is the place in Missoula for music, posters, cards, gag gifts, jewelry, and on and on.
Big and random, this place is part of Missoula culture.
The Trail Head
Like the best independent bookstores, The Trail Head (221 E. Front St., 406/543-6966,
www.trailheadmontana.net ) is a part of the Missoula community and thrives by knowing the
area as well as its activities and specific conditions. Trail Head staff participate regularly in
volunteer efforts to preserve and enhance recreational opportunities in the region. The store
has fantastic gear for nearly every activity in the area, including skiing, boating, camping,
and climbing. Since 1974, great adventures have started here.
MONTANA'S LITERARY TREASURE
Few states can boast a nearly 1,200-page, five-pound tome dedicated to the remark-
able literature that has come from and defined the state. (The state's “Big Sky”
moniker even came courtesy of A. B. Guthrie's classic 1947 novel The Big Sky. )
Montana's literary anthology, The Last Best Place, was published in 1988, and the
state's literary status only continues to grow. This may partly be attributed to poet and
