whenever the river is not covered by ice. The city is raising money to get another wave—the

ENTERTAINMENT AND EVENTS
Nightlife
Home to college students and artists, there is no shortage of watering holes in Missoula,
and a brief walk will take you to establishments that are pulsing with activity. Microbrew
enthusiasts will enjoy the Bayern Brewery (1507 Montana St., 406/721-1482,
www.bayernbrewery.com , noon-8pm daily), which always has six of their beers available
along with their own coffee blends and a small but delectable sampling of German food.
The beer garden is a great place to relax in summer, and brewery tours are available by
appointment. The Kettle House Brewing Co. (313 N. 1st St. W. and 602 Myrtle St., 406/
728-1660, www.kettlehouse.com , noon-9pm daily) is home of the famous “cold smoke”
and has two locations for visitors to sample excellent local brews.
For more of a late-night scene, try tried-and-true favorites like The Rhinocerous (158
Ryman St., 406/721-6061, 11am-2am Mon.-Sat., noon-2am Sun.), with more than 50 beers
on tap; Feruqi's (318 N. Higgins Ave., 406/728-8799, 4pm-2am Mon.-Sat., 7pm-2am
Sun.), an intimate spot known for its martinis and its setting in a historic building; or
the Oxford Saloon (337 N. Higgins Ave., 406/549-0117, www.the-oxford.com , 24 hours
daily), which offers a pretty tasty Garbage Omelet. Music-lovers will do well at the
Top Hat Lounge & Casino (134 W. Front St., 406/728-9865, www.tophatlounge.com ,
11:30am-2am daily), which has been bringing live music of every genre to Missoula since
1952. The place can pack in 700 bodies, and the tapas-style menu does not disappoint.
There is plenty of room to bust a move on the dance floor at Elbow Room Bar (1855 Steph-
ens, 406/549-7575, www.elbowroombar.com , 11am-2am daily), which is part sports bar,
part disco, part pub with a hearty menu. A bit mellower and far more upscale is Plonk (322
N. Higgins Ave., 406/926-1791, www.plonkwine.com , 11:30am-midnight Tues.-Thurs.,
11:30am-1am Fri.-Sat., 4pm-midnight Sun.-Mon.), which pairs exquisite wine, inspired
cocktails, and elegant food with eclectic music. Too pricey for the average college student,
Plonk tends to appeal to an older crowd.
