lakes to the rocky moraines and the last remaining glaciers themselves, this region is among
the most dramatic and startlingly beautiful in the park.
This is not a place to be enjoyed from inside a car, although those on a tight schedule
would still benefit from making the journey just to walk around the hotel to drink in the
stunning surroundings. Many Glacier is best suited for active travelers: The hiking and
boating are exceptional, and it is one of the rare places in the Lower 48 where a day hike
can lead you to an actual glacier. Come to Many Glacier to see the splendid scenery, but if
possible, stay a few days to truly enjoy it.
MM Grinnell Glacier
Named for conservationist and explorer George Bird Grinnell, Grinnell Glacier lies in the
heart of Many Glacier and is a symbol both of the park's wilderness and of the dramatic
climatic changes that are occurring. Because the glacier is accessible within a day's hike,
its startling shrinkage—from 710 acres in 1850 to 220 acres in 1993—has been captured on
film. Still, as long as it exists, this glacier is well worth visiting.
