Glacier's diversity of habitats is a critical factor in the spectrum of wildlife that calls the
park home. From the minute pygmy shrew, which weighs as much as a dime, to indicator
species like the grizzly bear, gray wolf, and mountain lion, Glacier is home to 68 species
of mammals and more than 270 species of birds. Missing are bison and woodland caribou,
both of which were grossly overhunted in the region prior to the park's designation in 1910.
Today the park is a safe haven for the Canada lynx and the grizzly bear, both of which
are threatened, and the once-endangered gray wolf. There are healthy populations of elk,
primarily in the grasslands of the park's eastern side, as well as moose, mountain goats, and
