In-Depth Information
Vehicles and vehicle combinations longer than 21 feet, including bumpers, and wider
than 8 feet, including mirrors, are not permitted on the Going-to-the-Sun Road between
Avalanche Campground and the Sun Point Parking Area. Vehicles and vehicle combina-
tions taller than 10 feet may have difficulty navigating the Going-to-the-Sun Road west-
bound from Logan Pass to the Loop because of rock overhangs. Stock trucks and trailers
can access Packers Roost on the west side and Siyeh Bend on the east side.
By Train
Amtrak (800/872-7245, www.amtrak.com ) runs the Empire Builder from Chicago to
Seattle, with daily stops in both directions in East Glacier (summer only), Essex, and West
Glacier. Glacier Park Inc. shuttles (406/892-2525, www.glacierparkinc.com ) service the
train stations in both East and West Glacier.
Transportation within the Park
Glacier's free shuttle system (406/892-2525, www.nps.gov/glac , 7:30am-7pm daily early
July-early Sept.) picks up and drops off at 16 different stops, including Apgar Transit
Center, Avalanche Creek, Logan Pass, St. Mary Visitors Center, and a number of trailheads.
West-side shuttles depart every 15-30 minutes and east-side shuttles depart every 40-60
minutes. The shuttle is an excellent option for hiking from the Logan Pass Visitor Center,
which often has a full parking lot otherwise, or for doing trails that start at one trailhead and
end at another.
Tours
Scenic, interpretive Red Bus Tours (406/892-2525 or 403/236-3400 from Canada,
www.glacierparkinc.com , from $30 adults) are another way to see the park. These snazzy
vintage buses, known locally as “Jammers,” were originally built by the White Motor Com-
pany 1936-1939. The vehicles, which have been overhauled for safety purposes, are 25
feet long, seat 17 passengers, and have the added bonus of roll-back canvas tops, ideal for
sunny summer days. There are numerous tours available, and informative guides will en-
tertain you with facts and stories about Glacier. It's an excellent way to leave the driving to
someone else.
