theater, Lake McDonald Lodge, and Many Glacier Hotel host slide lectures as part
of the ranger program. There are also full-day hikes, boat tours, and Junior Ranger
programs available.
One of the most noteworthy park programs is “Native America Speaks,” where
members from the Blackfeet, Salish, Kootenai, and Pend d'Oreille tribes provide
campfire talks about their life, culture, and influence in Glacier. The speakers range
from artists and musicians to historians who intersperse their talks with personal stor-
ies and Native American legends. These talks are given at the Apgar, Many Glacier,
Two Medicine, and Rising Sun Campgrounds. During July-August, the St. Mary Vis-
itor Center also hosts weekly Native American dance troupes. For times, locations,
and descriptions of the ranger programs offered, pick up the free “Ranger-led Activ-
ity Schedule” available at any of the park's visitors centers.
For information on ranger stations or programs and to download park brochures,
contact Park Service Headquarters (406/888-7800, www.nps.gov/glac ) .
The Visitor Information Headquarters Building (8am-4:30pm Mon.-Fri., excluding
holidays, year-round) is located just inside the West Glacier park entrance before the actual
entrance station; turn right after passing the “Glacier National Park” sign. They can issue a
variety of passes and permits as well as answer most questions.
The park's visitors centers all have knowledgeable staff, guide books and maps, and ba-
sic amenities. In West Glacier, visit the Apgar Visitor Center in the central part of Apgar
Village. It is two doors down from the Backcountry Permit Office, which also provides
trip planning 8am-5:30pm daily during summer. The St. Mary Visitors Center, located in-
side the eastern park entrance, is the park's largest and is the only visitors center where you
can obtain backcountry permits.
The Two Medicine Ranger Station and Many Glacier Ranger Station, located close
to the campgrounds, provide visitor information and permits.
