preserved buffalo jump sites in the state. An hour-long guided tour—the only way visitors
are permitted into the site—takes visitors through bison kill areas and campsite deposits,
some of which are 20 feet deep.
Festivals and Events
The biggest event of the year by far in the Havre area is the Rocky Boy Pow Wow and
Rodeo in Box Elder, usually held around the first weekend in August. The four-day event
includes a rodeo, a dance, and costume and drumming competitions for more than $100,000
in prize money. There are cultural demonstrations, grand entries twice daily, and plenty of
food vendors. The venues are decided each year and can be located through the Rocky Boy
Agency (406/395-4478 or 800/823-4478, www.rockyboy.org ) .
Recreation
Winter visitors to Havre, hardy souls indeed, should do whatever they can to ski at Bear
Paw Ski Bowl (66 Saddle Butte Dr., Rocky Boy's Reservation, 29 miles south of Havre,
406/265-8404, www.skibearpaw.com , 10:30am-4pm Sat.-Sun. Jan.-Mar., $20 adults, $18
children 9-12, free for children under 9 and seniors over 80). Known as the “Last Best Ski
Hill,” Bear Paw is an old-fashioned ski area with two lifts, excellent advanced terrain, and
an entirely volunteer staff. There are no rentals available, so pick skis up in Havre at Master
Sports (301 1st St., 406/265-4712, 9am-6pm Mon.-Fri., 9am-5:30pm Sat.). The hill is open
only on weekends, but it's a day of skiing with a side of nostalgia that you will never forget.
Accommodations
Havre has a plentiful assortment of hotels and motels, and surprisingly they are often
fully booked with business travelers, so advance reservations are a good idea. On the
west end of town, the AmericInn (2520 U.S. 2 W., 406/395-5000 or 877/634-3444,
www.amercinn.com , $113-158) is the newest and one of the largest, with an indoor pool,
oversize rooms, Wi-Fi, and hearty breakfasts. Other options include Best Western Plus
(1345 1st St., 406/265-4200 or 888/530-4100, www.bestwestern.com , $89-130), Havre Su-
per 8 (166 19th Ave. W., 406/265-1411 or 800/800-8000, $61-77) and TownHouse Inn
of Havre (601 W. 1st St., 406/265-6711 or 800/442-4667, www.townhouseinnhavre.com ,
$87-100).
In the center of downtown, El Toro (521 1st St., 800/422-5414, $61-84) is a good bar-
gain in an excellent location. The Spanish architecture is unexpected, but the rooms are ba-
sic and nice.
