MM THE BOB MARSHALL WILDERNESS COMPLEX
With more than 1.5 million acres, the Bob Marshall Wilderness Complex is one of the
largest and most remote wilderness areas in the Lower 48. The mountains soar above 9,000
feet, and the Continental Divide splits the region into several headwater drainage areas.
Numerous lakes and pristine trout-laden rivers are here along with copious animals, in-
cluding elk, white-tailed and mule deer, gray wolves, Canada lynx, bobcats, bighorn sheep,
mountain goats, wolverines, and cougars. The area was named for its first and perhaps most
vociferous champion, Bob Marshall, a forester, author, explorer, and leader in the protec-
tion of wildlands. The area was first set aside in 1940, shortly after Marshall's death, and
was designated as wilderness by the federal government in conjunction with the 1964 Wil-
derness Act.
