Literature & Cinema
Morocco's rich oral tradition has kept shared stories and histories alive. Watch the
story-tellers and singers in Marrakesh's Djemaa el-Fna in action and you'll under-
stand how the country's literary tradition has remained so vital and irrepressible, des-
pite press censorship. More recently, novelists like Tahar ben Jelloun have brought
their rich prose to bear on the national experience. Moroccan cinema is younger still,
but the country is actively moving beyond being a glitzy film location to a producer in
its own right.
