$$$$
Also a pricey property, Palmetto Beach Hotel does offer a lot for
the money. Prices range from about US $170-250 per person,
with all rates including breakfast, lunch, and dinner but not
drinks. Children under 12 sharing a room with parents stay for
free. The resort is closed from September through November,
the island's slowest season.
Recently refurbished, the 24-junior suite resort is located on a
great stretch of beach which all rooms overlook. A reflection of
its Italian owners, the meals have a Mediterranean flair. When
it's time to work off some of those calories, guests find plenty of
sporting options.
Special Features/Activities: scuba diving, snorkeling, excur-
sions to the bird sanctuary, horseback riding, tennis, windsurf-
ing, and more.
Tables for Two
At the resort restaurants, you'll find familiar dishes on the
menu as well as a few island specialties such as christ-
ophine, a type of squash; pepperpot, a spicy stew; afungi, a
pudding of cornmeal and okra; and ducana, a pudding made
from grated sweet potato and coconut, sugar, and spices boiled
in a banana leaf. Save a little room to finish off your meal with a
taste of the sweet Antigua black pineapple. The most popu-
lar beer on the island is Wadadli, made locally.
