In-Depth Information
Stay out of the direct sun.
Make sure you are both protected from the sun.
Wear wide brimmed hats and caps as well as sun-
glasses.
Wear sunscreen. Sunburned skin is a definite no-no.
Avoid the sun between the hours of 10 am and 2 pm;
that's when the sun's rays are the strongest. Enjoy
an early morning hike then kick back and take a
swim break that afternoon.
Time Zones
The Caribbean straddles two time zones. The western islands -
Jamaica and Cayman - fall in the Eastern time zone, the same
as the East Coast of the US. The eastern islands fall in the At-
lantic time zone, one hour ahead of Eastern time.
The Caribbean islands do not observe Daylight Saving Time.
During the summer months, the western islands are the same
as the Central time zone; the eastern islands the same as the
Eastern time zone.
But why worry about the time? Forget the time zones and enjoy
island time. When the sun is up, roll out of bed. When it sets,
head off the beach and get cleaned up for dinner. When you're
hungry, eat, and when you get tired, go to bed.
Currency
You'll find that US currency is accepted on many Caribbean is-
lands, although you'll often receive change back in the local cur-
rency.
We recommend using a credit card for everything but tips and
street purchases. Besides avoiding the hassle of currency con-
version (and back again when you leave), you'll usually receive
the best possible exchange rate with a credit card. Credit card
companies shop for the best exchange rate for you - saving you
some extra pennies and time along the way. Also, many compa-
nies limit your liability if your card is stolen.
