In-Depth Information
C harlotte Amalie is very much a pedestrian city, and
you'll be able to shop and dine all day without need of a
taxi. After dark, however, use common sense precau-
tions when setting out. Like other cities its size, Char-
lotte Amalie has had its share of crime.
Nightlife
Much of the nightlife on the island centers around the resort ho-
tels. Wyndham Sugar Bay (
340-777-7100), Bluebeard's
Beach Club & Villa (
340-776-4770), and Sapphire Beach
(
340-775-6100) each feature popular local bands on a regular
basis. Gladys' Café (
340-774-6604) in Charlotte Amalie has
a jazz band every Friday night.
Just the Facts
Entry Requirements: You'll need proof of identity upon air-
port check-in, but incoming travelers do not need to pass
through immigration when they reach St. Thomas. You can also
travel to nearby St. John and St. Croix from St. Thomas with-
out proof of citizenship. It's a good idea to bring along your pass-
port, however, in case you decide to take a day-trip to the
nearby British Virgin Islands.
Getting Around: You'll never have to look far for a taxi; in fact,
they'll often come looking for you. However, if the two of you
need a ride from Charlotte Amalie between about 3 pm and
5 pm, you may have to check with several taxi drivers. During
this time, they start picking up cruise passengers to return to
the ship and won't take less than a full car or van load. Check
for licensed taxi services by looking for license plates that begin
with the letters “TP.”
The two major towns - Charlotte Amalie and Red Hook - are
connected both by road and ferry.
