We loved this hotel from the moment our transport began de-
scending the steep hill on the island's western side and we
caught sight of the hotel's trademark red roofs. The guest
rooms, scattered throughout the lush grounds, are housed in
two-story villas, each with louvered windows and private
screened porch. During our stay here, we began every morning
with a room service breakfast on the screened porch, listening
to the sea. Most of our evenings ended there as well, watching
the palms sway in the moonlight.
T This ranks as one of the most romantic places to stay
in the Caribbean. Second-floor rooms are the top
choice. Ceilings soar to a West Indian peak, and
porches are above the view of pedestrian beachcomb-
ers.
No matter where you stay, you're only steps away from the
beach along walkways that wind through grounds filled with
hibiscus, bougainvillea, oleander, elephant's ear, philoden-
drons, banana trees, and towering palms.
Carambola was once part of the Rockresort chain, a handful of
exclusive resorts developed by Laurance Rockefeller in the
1960s and 70s. Rockefeller himself had a vacation home at
Carambola, the 200-year-old Davis Bay Suite, which once was a
sugar mill. Damaged in Hurricane Marilyn, the suite has been
