In-Depth Information
The most obvious shop in Punda is the J.L. Penha and Sons
department store, housed in a beautiful lemon-tinted colonial
building constructed in 1708. You'll find just about everything,
from perfumes to fine jewelry to collectibles.
For lower-priced purchases, take a turn off Breede Straat and
enjoy a stroll down Heeren Straat or Keuken Straat. These
streets are filled with electronics, inexpensive clothing, and
housewares. It's a fun atmosphere where you'll have a chance to
mix with residents.
Stroll through the streets and alleyways, then walk across the
Wilhelmina Bridge to the Floating Market, one of Willems-
tad's most colorful sites. Venezuelans sell fresh fish and vegeta-
bles (a real commodity on an island without much agriculture).
Stroll along the waterway booths and buy exotic tropical fruits
or watch fishermen cleaning their catch for a buyer. Behind the
stalls, colorful schooners make an excellent photo. Hours vary
depending on the day's sales, but arrive early for the best selec-
tion. We highly recommend the market to enjoy a slice of island
life and, for the photographers out there, to capture one of
Curaçao's most colorful sights.
Nightlife
Discos, live music, and casinos offer nightlife to restless visi-
tors, especially in the Willemstad area and in the major hotels.
The Sonesta Casino offers one room of slots and table action.
The Papaya Plantation House is open Thursday and Friday
nights with an open-air barbecue and music by local bands,
599-9-869-5850.
For those looking for a night out, there are several places to
choose from on Curaçao. Hook's Hut, located at Las Palmas
Beach (
599-9-4626575), and The Music Factory (
599-9-
4610631) are local favorites. Club Façade (
599-9-4614640),
and The Jail (
599-9-4656810) have dancing.
