In-Depth Information
look at cave formations and small pools in this underground
wonderland.
One of the island's most popular attractions is the Bermuda
Aquarium and Zoo, in Flatts Village, halfway between St.
George's and Hamilton,
441-293-2727. This site is an excel-
lent stop for travelers looking for a break from the beach. From
the moment you step from the sunny outdoors into the dark,
cool interior of the aquarium, you'll be transported into the un-
dersea environment that lies just off Bermuda's pink beaches.
The well-kept tanks each feature local marine life ranging from
green morays to gray triggerfish. Free audio handsets allow vis-
itors to hear more about the tank's residents.
The aquarium is just the introduction to the large complex,
however. Outside, harbor seals play in their tanks or laze in the
sunshine. Nearby, the Natural History Museum houses ex-
hibits on everything from whaling to undersea exploration.
Outside stands the zoo. Along with free-ranging peacocks and
exhibits of lemurs and sloths, the zoo is especially noted for its
Australasia exhibit. Animals are separated from visitors by
flowing water to provide an unobstructed view. Matschies Tree
Kangaroos, tree shrews, Murray river turtles, and binturongs
(bearcats) are found in the display.
Shopping
Whether you've come to Hamilton to buy a wedding ring or just
to pick up a souvenir of your romantic getaway, you'll find that
this waterside community is a shopper's dream. Goods run the
gamut, but look primarily for imported items such as Swiss
watches, English china, Scottish tweeds, Italian leathers, and
more. Most shops sell high-ticket items but, if you are a savvy
shopper and familiar with price tags at home, you'll see that
they often come at substantial savings. One of the largest stores
in Hamilton is Trimingham's (
441-295-1183, www.trim-
inghams.com), located on Front Street. Here you'll find duty-
free jewelry, perfumes, china, crystal, and more. This shop has
served Bermuda shoppers since 1842.
Another favorite shopping area is the Royal Naval Dockyard.
This enclosed mall includes numerous small boutiques selling
everything from T-shirts to souvenirs.
