Getting Around: With driving on the left, taxi and limo ser-
vice are the best way to get around. Rates are set by the govern-
ment at $2.20 for the first quarter-mile for one or two
passengers. Every additional quarter-mile will be charged at
30ยข per mile. Extra passengers pay $3 per person. On New
Providence Island, expect to pay about $15 to get from the air-
port to Cable Beach; $20 for a ride downtown; or $24 (plus a $2
bridge toll) to reach Paradise Island. Car rental desks are avail-
able at the airport and major hotels. Plan on plenty of traffic
within Nassau, however, and don't forget that you'll be driving
on the left.

Currency: The currency is the Bahamian dollar, which is on
par with the US dollar. US currency is also widely accepted.

Barbados
G eorge Washington slept here. Really. This tiny island has
been welcoming tourists since the days before the American
Revolution. George himself came to enjoy the healthful climate
(much needed by his tuberculosis-stricken brother, Lawrence)
back in 1751, and visitors have been coming to this island in the
far eastern Caribbean ever since.
The reasons are easy to see. An idyllic climate. An atmosphere
that combines tropical casualness with British formality, where
