Introduction
When Jimmy Buffet first arrived in Quepos in 1998 he dubbed it another “Margaritaville.”
He'd been trying to get to Costa Rica for 20 years and finally made it down as part of an
epic trip to celebrate turning 50 as related in his book “A Pirate Looks at Fifty.”
Though it's true that we do love our margaritas, Quepos and its Manuel Antonio rain
forest suburb have evolved since he stayed at the Si Como No Hotel 17 years ago. If Jimmy
Buffet thought Quepos was fun back then, he should see it now, with its abundance of tours,
activities, services and restaurants. And yet, we're still a small town.
He also said he might write a travel guide someday, but since he hasn't, I offer you
this unique guide as an intimate glimpse into our version of Margaritaville, which — like a
Jimmy Buffet concert — is often said to be the happiest place on Earth. It offers an insider's
look at what the locals know and love most about this little slice of paradise. Where do we
most like to eat, drink, and shop? When we want a little adventure, which tours do we take?
Yes, we're letting you in on our best-kept secrets and that's what sets this topic apart. If you
like the idea offeeling at home and connected to a vacation spot before youeven arrive, then
this guide is for you.
By all means bring along your mainstream travel info, but let us fill in the white spaces
between the lines like no one else could possibly do.
This is the expanded third edition. More categories have been added and in some cases
general ones have been divided into several specific ones. The winners in each category are
featured in their own chapters. Some of their stories are quirky, others are inspirational. A
feeling of friendship, belonging, and the pursuit of dreams all weigh heavily on how our
business owners measure success.
Every year we throw a huge town party and present each winner with an award. It's a
privilege to share this year's winners and their stories with you. One of the many things I
love about this place is how much we all enjoy being together.
But don't wait 20 years like Jimmy Buffet did. There's just too much fun to be had right
now.
