Lance was certainly dubious when Adrienne shared her plan with him. “I just thought
it was the most ridiculous idea I had ever heard. I wasn't a coffee person at the time.”
Café Milagro began as a coffee roaster, and coffee remains at the core of the business,
but Adrienne and Lance have seen it grow in diversity and scale. “I actually never wanted
a restaurant or coffee shop, and I was an incredibly reluctant restaurateur,” she confesses.
“The idea was to have a coffee roasting company, to keep it simple and just enjoy it.”
SincereturningtoCostaRicaLancehadtriedseveralsmallerventuresinthearea,from
local travel magazines to cigar sales. “After those little adventures, this house in Manuel
Antonio became available and I thought it would be a great location for Café Milagro,”
he recalls. “We discussed it and agreed it was going to be a good thing, but then we told
our friends they informed us that we were insane and that this was the worst location in
the entire area. They said it was a drive-by location; that nobody would ever stop here.”
Nonetheless they set about renovating the building like determined army ants, not allowing
such negativity to slow them down. After several months of hard work, they opened Café
Milagro in Manuel Antonio.
