ledgement,” John says. “It's a pleasure to do this work, so it's nice to be recognized, but
it's not a hardship or a burden at all.”
The PAWS Board hopes this award will raise their profile further and that in turn will
increase awareness and support for the work they do.
Kathleen Rioux Toval, recalls, “When I first came here 15 years ago, there were
'broken' and sick dogs all over. It was hard to walk through Quepos and not feel over-
whelmed with sadness for these creatures. PAWS has made a HUGE difference.”
John feels that the tide has been turning in terms of animal care in the area. “People
have noticed a real change in the feeling of the town, where they're no longer seeing a
number of dogs or cats in distress, so that's rewarding.”
PAWS' contributions are far-reaching. Their services benefit not just the animals, but
the lives of all those who open their doors and their hearts to these four-legged friends.
