LIZ PIEDRAITA RESTREPO
Let us dance in the sun, wearing wild flowers in our hair.

“My mom, my aunts, my cousins in Colombia are all stylists. I come from a family of styl-
ists,” says Liz Piedraita Restrepo of Dani Peluqueria Salon. It's little surprise then that from
her earliest years, Liz has been following the same path. “I have many aunts and they were
surprised to see a girl of eight or nine wearing makeup better than theirs,” she laughs, “and
braids. More than anything else, braids was what I did for my aunts.” Since those tender
years Liz has expanded her skills - and her passion for her art - and now runs a successful
salon offering professional services.
Liz opened her business about seven years ago, after learning the trade in her native
Columbia. She chose Quepos as a place to settle because of the similarities and contrasts
with her home in Medellin. “Medellin is a big city — there is everything,” she says, noting
that competition there for styling services is fierce. “My salon was born from the idea of
providing the best services here in the Quepos and Manuel Antonio area. Many people can't
travel to San Jose just to have their hair styled.” It was not just a great business opportunity;
Quepos appealed to her for other reasons as well.
“I loved the idea of coming from Colombia to a place that is very peaceful, very hot,”
Liz says. “I like the warm earth, beach, sun, sand and sea.” Liz liked the challenge of be-
ing able to care for hair and skin in an area where those very elements work against her.
“Hair suffers more discoloration and less hydration here,” Liz explains. “We have products
and treatments specifically designed for our climate so that people can look their best all the
time.”
