KEVIN HESLIN
Photography is a way of touching, of loving. What you have captured on film is forever.
Aaron Siskind
Like a waterfall that suddenly appears through the trees in the jungle, Kevin Heslin'sdiscov-
ery of photography was both unexpected and exhilarating. “The first time I held a camera it
was perfect,” he confides. “It was like what I was looking for my whole life, so I immedi-
ately fell in love with it.” That love affair has been shared with numerous locals for over ten
years now and he isn't slowing down.
Kevin came to Manuel Antonio as part of a trip he never completed. He was headed for
Chile by land and decided to see what Costa Rica had to offer.
“I loved it. I think it was what I was looking for anyway. It was a small town, good surf,
everybody's nice; it's just a beautiful area.” And as Jimmy Buffet once wrote, “Bougain-
villa vines and coconut palms grow wild in the alleys.” A perfect place for a photographer. It
didn't take much convincing for him to stay and so he found a way to support himself here.
He started out taking photos for tour companies locally. “Once I held the pro camera and
started taking pictures and saw what a camera can do— it sees very differently than we do
— I was just amazed by it. It was the coolest thing for me.” He quickly transitioned from
shooting action activities to more general photography, setting up his own business to offer
everything from wedding packages to events like graduation and family portraits.
