as a bus driver when he had a dream that he was carving something, so he started making
things. He puts all his love into every piece.” Ana's personal knowledge of the artists and
commitment to them shines through as she points out each style and the multitude of works
on display.
Regalame also stocks jewelry, again the workoflocal artisans. OneCosta Rican carver
has turned his hand to crafting delicate wooden pendants, rings and bracelets. Another pro-
duces silver earrings in the form of playful jungle monkeys and the distinctive dangling
sloths. They lie glittering under golden lights alongside strings of freshwater pearls and
polished stones and minerals.
As Ana guides you through the store she is adamant that it is everyone's collection,
not just hers. “The customer is the one who teaches you what they like,” she says. “Maybe
something is not for them this time but somebody else will like it.” She points to a shelf
where several cute ceramic owls watch the goings on. One customer was looking for
something distinctly Costa Rican, but wanted it to fit in when she got home. It turned out
she liked to collect owls, and Ana mentioned it to some of the artists.
“We listen to what our customers need. They give us ideas,” she says. “Next time
we'll have it for them. I try to grant my customers' wishes.”
As for the artists, expect more great works from them appearing soon at Regalame as
they continue to dip their imaginations into the splendor of the surrounding rainforest.
