cheesecakes - and they thought I was crazy. But I have to say people have started to love
them more and more. It's the same with the music; when I started bringing new people in
they missed the rock 'n' roll! As I brought in a little bit more cultured bands, people began
to like them more and more.”
Some of the more exotic flavors that Emilio's offers are a direct result of the owner's
roots. At first he was given a few recipes by Venezuelan friends and developed variations
on them as well as taking advice from others who owned bakeries. But some of the desserts
are more original, conceived by Emilio himself. “Since I'm a chocolate lover, people give
me all kinds of chocolate. When I taste something and say, 'I love it!' — I want to try it in
a cake.”

with something comparable to lust. “The Peanut Butter Pie is to die for!” says Vernita
Gundy, a local volunteer at Kids Saving the Rainforest. “I feel like I need to be alone to eat
it!”
Mike Preston, reservation specialist at Coyaba Tropical says, “Hands down, Emilio's
Chocolate Expresso Flourless Cake is sinfully good.”
Bill Forbes, owner of Mucho Musculo Gym, sums it up, “I love ALL the desserts and
the entire menu and the music and the vibe. To me Emilio's is one of the best things about
Manuel Antonio - a little bit of sophistication without any pretention.”

to scientists, listening to music can help reduce stress, relieve symptoms of depression, and
can help boost physical performance. So, it could be argued that Emilio is contributing to
the health of the community with his offerings.
Good coffee, smooth jazz and great desserts are the hallmarks of Emilio's Café. From
the regionally sourced coffee beans to the locally inspired 'latte art' designs swirled into
the top of cappuccinos, Emilio's has a touch of Europe with a rich Costa Rican feel. “The
idea is to give people good quality,” Emilio says. “We try to make the desserts with the best
ingredients on the market.” To be voted Best Desserts tells him it's working. “I'd like to
say thanks. I really appreciate that they like it.”
And why not? Emilio's exotic creations make eating dessert a special occasion, with a
portion of mellow jazz on the side.
