Hostels
NZ is packed to the rafters with backpacker hostels, both independent and part of large
chains, ranging from small, homestay-style affairs with a handful of beds to refurbished ho-
tels and towering modern structures in the big cities. Non-member rates for a hostel bed usu-
ally range between $25 and $35 per night.

Budget Backpacker Hostels ( www.bbh.co.nz ) NZ's biggest hostel group, with almost
300 hostels on its books, including homestays and farmstays. Membership costs $45 and en-
titles you to stay at member hostels at rates listed in the annual (free) BBH World Traveller
Accommodation booklet. Nonmembers pay an extra $3 per night, though not all hostel own-
ers charge the difference. Pick up a membership card from any member hostel, or have one
mailed to you overseas for $50 (see the website for details).
YHA New Zealand (Youth Hostels Association; www.yha.co.nz ) YHA has around 50 hos-
tels in prime NZ locations. It's part of the Hostelling International (HI; www.hihostels.com )
network, so if you're already an HI member in your own country, membership entitles you
to use NZ hostels. You can buy a year-long membership card at major NZ YHA hostels for
$42 (free for under-18s), or book online and have your card mailed to you overseas for the
same price. Hostels also take non-YHA members for an extra $3 per night. NZ YHA hostels
also supply bed linen.
Nomads Backpackers ( www.nomadsworld.com ) Eight franchises throughout NZ: Auck-
land (two), Rotorua, Waitomo, Taupo, Wellington, Kaiteriteri and Queenstown. Membership
costs AUD$37 for 12 months and gives you various discounts and one free night's accom-
modation.
Base Backpackers ( www.stayatbase.com ) A chain with eight hostels around NZ. Expect
clean dorms, women-only areas and party opportunities aplenty. Offers a 10-night 'Base
Jumping' accommodation card for $239, bookable online.
