In-Depth Information
MAPS
The most detailed map is the NZTopo50 CG07 (Sand Hill Point). DOC also produces a map
for the coastal track, which you can purchase from the information centre in Tuatapere; you
will also be given a detailed map when you make your track booking.
LODGES, GUIDED TRAMPS & BOOKINGS
The track is managed by the trust like a Great Walk would be: advance bookings are essen-
tial and you must pick up accommodation passes before beginning the tramp.
Independent walking passes cost $175 and cover two nights' accommodation at two
lodges: Okaka and Port Craig. These huts are very well serviced, with heating, gas cookers,
running water, flush toilets and a drying room. Also included in the cost is hot porridge for
breakfast. Optional extras include 'helipacking' ($80), where your pack is transferred
between lodges; lodge room upgrades ($100 per person in twin or double beds, linen
provided, plus a hot shower); and hot showers ($10; bring your own towel). A Prime Pack-
age ($450) is also available, which includes a pre-trip night's accommodation, a pack trans-
fer for the first day, sleeping bags and a freeze-dried evening meal.
Guided tramps (four days, $1595 share twin) are also available, which include a pre-trip
night's accommodation, helicopter flight, private lodge rooms and all meals.
Note that in winter, the independent walking pass reduces to $25.
Bookings should be made through Tuatapere Hump Ridge Track Office ( Click here ) .
8 Getting to/from the Tramp
The trailhead is at Rarakau, 19km from Tuatapere. The track trust operates its own trans-
port, available every day during high season, on scheduled days during the shoulder season,
and on demand during winter. Shuttles depart at 7.30am with local accommodation pick-ups
available. Shuttles leave Rarakau at 3pm for the return journey to Tuatapere.
Those with their own vehicle can leave it at the Rarakau car park. The car-park area is on
private land, is fenced and is overlooked by the farmhouse. A $5 donation is appreciated.
