WHEN TO TRAMP
The Hollyford is the only major low-level track in Fiordland and can be tramped year-
round. Summer is the most popular season.
WHAT TO BRING
Pack a stove and some fuel; there are no stoves in the huts along the track.
MAPS & BROCHURES
The best maps for this tramp are NZTopo50 CB09 (Hollyford), CA09 (Alabaster) and CA08
(Milford Sound) . DOC produces a Hollyford Track brochure.
HUTS, CAMPING & BOOKINGS
Trampers have the use of six DOC huts on the track. Five are Serviced huts
( www.doc.govt.nz; $15) : Hidden Falls, Lake Alabaster, Demon Trail, Hokuri and Martins Bay,
with mattresses, heating, water and toilet facilities. McKerrow Island is a Standard hut
( www.doc.govt.nz; $5) . Camping ($5) is permitted next to the huts, although the sandflies will
prevent this being even remotely enjoyable. Obtain your hut passes online from DOC
( www.doc.govt.nz ) .
To reach the trailhead, trampers will pass Gunn's Camp ( www.gunnscamp.org.nz; Lower
Hollyford Valley Rd; camping per person $12, dm $20) , a good place to head out from, especially if
you've just completed the Milford or Routeburn. A small store stocks tramping food, but the
highlight of the camp is undoubtedly the small museum dedicated to Davy Gunn (see Click
here ) and the history of the valley. It's a two-hour walk from the camp to the road end and
the start of the tramp, although the camp also offers transfers (by donation) and car storage
for $2 per day.
GUIDED TRAMPS
Hollyford Track ( 03-442 3000, 0800 832 226; www.hollyfordtrack.com ) offers three-day
guided tramps, staying at private huts/lodges, including a three-day tramp to Martins Bay
($1895) that ends with a scenic flight to Milford Sound.
