TOWNS & FACILITIES
TOP OF CHAPTER
Queenstown
03 / POP 18,000
Looking like a small town but displaying the energy of a small city, NZ's liveliest resort is
well used to visitors, so you can expect plenty of facilities but also big crowds, especially in
the peak summer tramping and winter ski seasons. To get to grips with the place, tackle the
demanding Ben Lomond Track , a six- to eight-hour tramp that starts in town and reaches
Ben Lomond summit (1748m) - it's a good way to get warmed up for your mountain adven-
tures.
4 Sleeping & Eating
There's no shortage of choice on both fronts, but be sure to book your accommodation in
advance December to February, or when the ski season's in full flight, June to September.
