In-Depth Information
head of the valley, a rewarding pilgrimage for those psyched out by the climb to Liverpool
Hut. It's another two hours (3.2km) to the valley head.
However, the Liverpool Hut contingent should cross the swing bridge at Liverpool
Stream and perhaps pause to fortify themselves for a climb of a couple of hours or so. It's
steep, and slippery, particularly below the bushline, so expect to put those arms into action
as you pull yourself up and onward.
Above the bush the track initially leads across steep exposed shingle, rock and tussock
terrain before reaching easier tussock-covered terrain and a knoll overlooking the hut. When
the hut is first sighted, do not sidle across to the hut below this knoll. Liverpool Hut (10
bunks), at its 1100m vantage, enjoys majestic views of Mt Aspiring/Tititea and surrounding
peaks.
Option 2: Aspiring Hut to French Ridge Hut
4-5 HOURS, 7.2KM, 1035M ASCENT
The French Ridge Track holds significant allure for mountain-lovers, but has been the
downfall of numerous trampers over the years. Although rated moderate, the upper part of
this route is very exposed and treacherous, so should be attempted only by the fit, experien-
ced and well equipped. It's no wonder this is a popular tramp, though, with French Ridge
Hut perched high on the flanks of its namesake mountain and the opportunity to venture fur-
ther up the ridge if desired.
Follow the track to Pearl Flat as described under Option 1. Cross the swing bridge at
Liverpool Stream, then continue 10 minutes further up the valley where a second swing
bridge provides access across the river. The track enters the bush and climbs steeply all the
way to the ridge, with narrow guts and creek beds to negotiate in the subalpine zone. Follow
the gentle tussock slopes for about 1km and you will reach French Ridge Hut (20 bunks),
just below the normal summer snowline of approximately 1500m.
If you wish to venture beyond the hut to the Quarterdeck and Bonar Glacier and onward
to Colin Todd Hut (12 bunks), you will need to be an experienced climber and have the ne-
cessary equipment. If you don't, then enjoy the views you have from the hut or hire a guide.
The vista from the top of the Quarterdeck is one of the best in the national park, with Mt
Aspiring/Tititea, the 'Matterhorn of the South', as a backdrop.
Option 3: Aspiring Hut to Cascade Saddle
4½ HOURS, 6KM, 1370M ASCENT
