Environment
The Mavora Lakes Walkway winds through a much more gentle topography than the Route-
burn or Caples Tracks, making the tramp ideal for families and others not up to a major
alpine crossing. Parklike tussock grasslands and beech forests dominate the broad valley,
which is up to 2km wide in places and is enclosed by 2000m peaks. Bird life is plentiful
along the track and includes riflemen, parakeets, tomtits and robins in the open forests, and
paradise shelducks in the wetland ponds.

WHEN TO TRAMP
This track can be tramped at any time of year. As some sections are exposed to mountain
weather, however, adequate equipment and good judgement are required.
MAPS & BROCHURES
The tramp is covered by NZTopo50 CC09 (North Mavora) and CB10 (Glenorchy). DOC's
Mavora Lakes Park brochure provides information on various recreational activities includ-
ing camping - an unsurprisingly popular pastime in the spectacular area around the lakes.
HUTS & CAMPING
Careys, Boundary and Taipo are all Standard huts ( www.doc.govt.nz; $5) . Greenstone is a
Serviced hut ( www.doc.govt.nz; $15) . Hut tickets can be purchased from any DOC visitor
centre nationwide. Idyllic Mavora Lakes Campsite, at the start of the walkway, is a Stand-
ard campsite ( www.doc.govt.nz; $6) with barbecues, water taps, toilets and sandflies on
standby.

DOC Queenstown Visitor Centre ( Click here ) , upstairs in Outside Sports, is the place to ar-
range logistics, obtain maps, passes and track updates and hire personal locator beacons.
DOC Fiordland National Park Visitor Centre ( Click here ) is close to the shores of Lake Te
Anau and can help with all tramping arrangements, local weather forecasts and information
on track conditions.
8 Getting to/from the Tramp
By car from SH94, between Mossburn and Te Anau, turn north at Centre Hill or Burwood
Station and follow Mt Nicholas Rd and then Mavora Lakes Rd (both unsealed) for 39km to
