In-Depth Information
WHAT TO BRING
It is best to carry a tent in case you get stranded overnight by high river levels. If you're
staying at the Ballroom Overhang, take a camp stove, as no fires are permitted.
MAPS & BROCHURES
This tramp is covered by NZTopo50 map BS19 (Punakaiki) and BS20 (Charleston). DOC's
Paparoa National Park brochure details tramps of varying lengths around the Punakaiki
area.
HUTS & CAMPING
There are no huts on this tramp. The Bivvy ( www.doc.govt.nz; free) known as the Ballroom
Overhang is the site of the only designated campsite.
8 WARNING
It cannot be stressed enough that the Inland Pack Track should not be attempted dur-
ing or after periods of heavy rain. There are numerous river crossings and the route
from Fossil Creek to Fox River/Dilemma Creek junction involves walking alongside and
through the creek. These rivers and creeks can rise very quickly following rainfall - a
swollen river should never be crossed.
Before departing, check with the Paparoa National Park Visitor Information Centre
( Click here ) , which posts daily weather forecasts. If heavy rain is forecast do not at-
tempt the track.
8 Getting to/from the Tramp
There are two places to start the tramp, both within a 15-minute walk of the National Park
Visitor Information Centre in Punakaiki. The most scenic start is from Pororari River bridge,
north on SH6. The alternative is off Waikori Rd, along the Punakaiki River, south on SH6.
The finish is at the Fox River bridge on SH6, 12km north of Punakaiki, from which there
are no reliable transport options. However, this is the Coast, where almost anything can hap-
pen. You may well be able to sort out some ad hoc arrangement, including getting the Inter-
City bus to pick you up on its way past. This may be arranged through the visitor centre,
who will have a handle on comings and goings.
