CAMPSITE$
White Horse Hill Camping Area
( 03-435 1186; campsites $10; shelter 8am-7pm Oct-Apr, to 5pm May-Sep) This basic DOC
campsite is 2km from the village centre. It has no electricity but boasts a pleasant shelter
and diverting views. Note that campers and walkers can also use the public shelter (
8am-7pm Oct-Apr, to 5pm May-Sep) in the village, which has running water, toilets and coin-op-
erated showers, but overnight stays are not permitted.
HOSTEL$
Unwin Hut
( 0275 235 360, 03-435 1100; www.alpineclub.org.nz; SH80; dm $30) Located 3.5km before Mt
Cook Village is basic Unwin Hut. This lodge belongs to the New Zealand Alpine Club but
nonmembers are welcome to stay, space permitting. There are basic bunks, a big common
room with a fireplace and kitchen.

Mt Cook YHA

hostel has a free sauna, drying room and log fires. Try to book a few days in advance.
LODGE$$$
Aoraki/Mt Cook Alpine Lodge

Turkish rugs and underfloor heating, this lodge features a huge lounge and kitchen, and an
alfresco barbecue area with superb mountain views.
INTERNATIONAL$$$
Hermitage Aoraki/Mt Cook Hotel
( 435 1809, 0800 686 800; www.hermitage.co.nz; Terrace Rd; meals $14-40) This sprawling com-
plex has several dining options running the gamut from snacks and sandwiches to a dinner
buffet. It is also home to the Sir Edmund Hillary Alpine Centre, with a theatre and museum
dedicated to the climbing history of the area.

Old Mountaineers Cafe Bar
( www.mtcook.com; Bowen Dr; lunch $17-24, dinner $22-35; ) Featuring mountain views, this
cosy place delivers top-notch burgers, pizza, pasta and salad, and is a good-value alternative
to the eateries at the Hermitage. Linger to study the old black-and-white pics and mountain-
eering memorabilia.
